Is there a product that will help remove the sludge and grime build-up in an automotive crankcase ('95 Miata).

Suggestions on preventing its return?

Thanks.

Engine flushes can be purchased at any store with auto supplies. They will dissolve some of the oil gunk and remove water contaminating the oil.

To prevent its return, change your oil & filter regularly.
Try not to make as many short trips - let the engine get hot enough to evaporate water and acids that condense in the oil.
Check for leaky gaskets that may be letting antifreeze get into oil.
Keep the air filter clean too.
Use synthetic oil - they are not as sensitive to heat and also keep engine cleaner in general then regular oil.

Actually there should not be any build up at all....If you use a modern oil (API SH or better) you should not experience sludge unless you keep the oil in the engine far too long, do drive exceptionally many short trips or have coolant leaking into the system.

Can you be somewhat more specific about the sludge you noticed (colour, easily wiped away or not, smell etc)? This might give some clue what the reason for its coming into being was. Also the parts of the engine where you found it might indicate a problem.
