does anyone know of a site with a good spreadsheet or something for checking slope stabilty rather than do numerous iterations by hand?

How about just buying a real slope stability program? If you are in the business, you need the correct tools. Or, you could try a free program, such as Caltrans' SnailZWin.

we don't do it really but it would be useful to do some prliminary checks before calling in the experts. Any links to that free site?

Then, before PCs there were chart solutions. Heck, chart solutions are what started geotechnical engineering!

Sometimes I still prefer chart-solutions for first estimations. Chart solution for slope stability analysis
you may find here: Be careful with simplified models disregarding the influence of seepage forces, slope stability is heavily influenced by this. In my opinion engineers should have gained a minimum of geotechnical expertise before performing slope stability analysis.
