I created a number of templates for various drawing sizes. Each drawing size has a sht1 template and a cont sht template. I saved these as *.SLDDOT's. Everything works fine unless you want to change the size of a drawing. When you go into the properties and browse, the dialog box shows just *.DRT's and *.SLDDRT's. Anyone know the fix?

I believe that when you are in your template you want to do a "Save As Sheet Format", this will create the slddrt, which you can then pick when you want to change the size of the sheet. I have the sheet formats and the templates saved in the same folder. I would guess there is a good reason it is setup this way but it always seemed odd that you had to have 2 different files.

.drwdot is a drawing template, slddrt is a sheet format. In a drawing, go to File > Save Sheet Format.

Well...I created the formats using "Save as" from the template. Still seems quirky but as long as it works.
Thanks

When I create sheet 2 of any format, I move out of the template folder the following *.drwdot of that sheet 2. This cleans up the start new dialog a lot. I never start a new sheet 2 from the new button. Sheet 2 is always create by adding sheet.

A Template (slddot) is the file that corresponds to a part template, assembly template, and holds all of the document specific settings, such as font, colors, layers, etc. A template has a sheet or sheets, but there is nothing on the sheets.

A Format (slddrt) is the border that goes on a drawing sheet. This contains notes, links to properties, logos, and the lines that comprise the drawing border.

I quit trying to understand WHY they made 2 "templates" and instead just accept that it does and got used to it.

Well...there didn't used to be a "slddot"....you just had new part, assembly, and drawing. For drawing you picked a "sheet format" when it loaded. Actually, sheet format was called "Template" at the time...."drt" meant drawing template.

You had default settings for dimension standards and such that are now known as "Document Settings". The templates (dot) they added allowed for you to save multiple settings like metric files and english which you couldn't do before.

As a side note which most of you may know.
While adding a new sheet 2, from sheet 1. A sheet 2 is create, but the sheet template is really sheet 1. Then I have to reload sheet 2 template.
I checked with my VAR and he says this is true. Someday it will be fixed.
Does anyone of you not have this problem in SolidWorks 2007 SP 2.0?

Yeah, that problem is in SP2.0, and it bites. In SW06, if you right-clicked a drawing, you got a choice on the sheet size you want the new sheet to be. In SW07, whenever you add a sheet, it's the same size as the current sheet.

For example, if I am currently on an "A" size sheet (8 1/2" x 11") and I add a sheet, the new sheet is an A size sheet. If I am currently on a "B" size sheet (11 1/2" x 17"), the new sheet will be a B size sheet. Most of my drawings are mixed sheets. I wish they still gave you the choice on what size sheet to add.

I don't think its ever worked that way for me. Whenever I create anoher sheet, it uses the same sheet size and format as the current sheet...always has.

I don't have SW06, but a fellow co-worker still had SW05 on his computer and it worked exactly like I stated. Right-click a drawing sheet and pick "Add Sheet" and you get this: Right-click sheet

In SW07, you can't pick the sheet format until AFTER you added the sheet.

You're right...it does prompt you....guess I've been entering through the dialogue for so long I've forgotten......we rarely mix different sheet sizes as we only use A and B size and most drawings are B.

For me, the 2007 is more desireable....but I can see why you may want it back the way it was.
