I've tended to shy away from keyways and use a roughened surface (1/4" amplitude per ACI) and use dowels.

Same here... and put a reglet on the exposed side to get a clean 'pour' line.

Why not stop the wall 8" short with dowels sticking out and you pour the slab over the wall?

I could stop it short, but would be a bit harder to form for contractor. I was envisioning they grade to top of wall, compact, and then pour a flat slab. There is some railing, so perhaps 8" would be better for the railing to be anchored.

You could bring the wall up the thickness of the slab and pour the slab against it; put in some premolded filler between the wall and slab. Then you have to make sure the contractor compacts the fill properly along the wall.

Bridgebuster, the Architect doesnt want a joint on the horizontal surface.
