Sketch & Model Dimension Different

On a part I have modeled, the model dimensionsthat show are not the same values as what show in the sketch. Also when I try to edit them from the model, the dimension values are purple and the extension lines are yellow. Does any one know why this would happen?

Try a Regen.

Purple Dims usually mean that the dim failed in some way. Sounds like a reference problem. You may want to redefine the refrences of the sketch and regen.

I looked at the references for that sketch...the only ones that are used arethedefault planes that we have in all of our parts. I can't find anything wrong with them.

U must have used the insert dimensions (instead of Show & Erase) to show the dimensions. If the feature for what u have shown the dimensions are missing the dimensions will turn purple...

Nope, I have d180 shown on the drawing, and d180 is the driving dimension in the model.

If it's angry purple then something failed. In that case the dimension shows what it should be when everything updates as planned and the actual model is the way it is, without update.

try checking the TOOLS-->RELATIONS and see if ur d180 is actually the driving dimension of ur model.... then regen...

Thanks for the suggestion, but none of the dimensions I'm having problems with are involved in any relations.

Yea, I'm having the same problem. I looked everywhere to find the cause. One thing I noticed is that it looks like it regenerates the feature twice. The dimensions in the sketcher are fine and yellow and the solid model measurements are correct, but my drawing shows purple dimensions and if I view the dimension in 3D and try to edit the feature (not in sketcher) it's purple.

Another thing I noticed is that when you view the feature in the model tree viewer where you can see all the dimensions (the other pullout tab which can also act as a web browser) it has the purple dimension values.

The only thing that I found is to re-dimension it. Sucks, but I don't know what else to do at this point.

Hope someone knows the answer.

Yep, re-dimensioning is the only fix I know of as well. It's kind of scary that Pro/E does this. Luckily the part that did this on me was a casting raw material, so the supplier uses the model (which is correct) instead of the drawing. It kind of pisses me off because it makes me look like an idiot, and I have no control of it because the dimensions that I was showing in the drawing didn't turn purple. They only showed purple in the model.

You can use the 'replace' command in the edit menu in sketcher to replace an old dim with a new one. The work-flow is:


edit -> replace-> pick old dim -> create new dim


The new dim, I believe, will have the same ID as the old and will still be shown on the drawing. Should save a bit of work if you're forced intore-creating the dim. At least I think that's how it works.

wow, that is dangerous.. good thing most things are made from 3D files.


I at least found the problem because my dimensions turned purple in the 2D drawings. I then had to redo all the GD&T which is, in my opinion, too many steps to do.


If it wasn't for the familiarity and the more powerful surfacing abilities of Pro, I would be using Solidworks. I'm tired of the quirks, crashing, and # of steps required to do things in Pro. It's really behind in terms of its GUI and feature creation logic - not to mention they're really expensive, their phone/ email support and software help sucks - if you don't pay for the expensive yearly maintenance, and .........


The industries' are changing over to Solidworks and Inventor. I'm learning it on my spare time, I would advise any Pro user to do the same.

thanks for the suggestion, i thought it would work - keeping the id numbers the same. so i went to an earlier version and tried it out but i'm still getting purple dims when double-clicking the feature in 3D.


the only solution seems to be deleting the dim and creating a new one.


..sounded right, though.. ^^

Yeah, I've already tried that too. It almost seems as though there is a disconnect between the sketcher dimension (sd*) and the model dimension (d*).

Been there, done that; and finally ended up buying (yep, my money not "boss"
money) Pro/E so it goes both ways. I don't pretend to know what 'industries' are
doing. (Ask Adrian. Maybe he knows.)


I don't suppose either problem model and drawing can be posted for examination
or has been sent to PTC? Talking about it isn't going to identify a logical
reason for the behavior or indicate the lack of one.

Yeah, this really needs to get sent to tech support. I recently had an issue with a corrupt file in WF2 and they were able to correct it for me. Sounds like something they should know about.

Try ...


_ Change the part accuracy. A small value; i.e. if the file is default .0012
relative change it to .0011. It causes a regen that seems to be unlike cycling
Insert Mode, Model Player, etc. I've seen all sorts of little failures (datum
curves lose pnt references, trims swap sides, etc.) as a result of doing so. It
may also 'fix' some.


_ Tightening, significantly, accuracy may be worth trying.

Suppress all features or go into Insert Mode after first feature then zip.


What version Pro/E? What's the FID of problem feat, any other helpful
descriptive info, etc.?

Are you talking about sending it to PTC tech support? PTC has FTP access for large files. The assembly I sent was 10 MB zipped.


Another trick you can use to reduce file size is suppress all the features and save it. Really. Sounds ridiculous, but it works.
