Sizing of Water Filtration system

I am trying to figure out how much space will be needed to house a water filtration system for a relatively small community. The source presently delivers circa 1,100m3 of drinking water per day and in the future will be expanded to about 2,000m3 per day. The filtration system will need to be able to filter out Cryposporidium and eliminate ecoli from the source. In addition does anyone have any recommendations for Reverse Osmosis systems or silimar to carry out this filtration? I know this is probably a very vague question but I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks

For a small facility like this, I would go with something simple to operate

For 2,000m3 per day, you are looking at 4 vertical multi-media conventional filters. The filters would each be about 6’-6”’ in diameter. You would need a building roughly 45’ x 50’ to house the filters and the rest of the equipment (polymer perhaps and chlorination).

I would not go with RO on such a snall system because it is more expensive and will require more O & M. You can also use higher rate filters, but you lose some of the safety factor in doing so.

Be sure to design your system to handle the peak hourly flow.

Can I assume this will be from a groundwater source? As bimr rightly mentions, what is your peak flow? If this is the single source of supply for your community I would build it so that you can run the plant at max flow with 2x filter units out of service to be safe. Will you be using chlorine for disinfection or are you relying on the filter to remove all of your Ecoli?

Thank you both very much for your help. Have almost decided on an ultra filtration system. A little bit more research pointed me in that direction! There are no data available for peak flows and chlorine will still be used for disinfection.
