Does anyone know if there is a standard approach for sizing the ground "Drain Wire" to connect MV shields to ground on MV cable terminations? From what I see the wire between termination kits shields and ground usually appears to be #10/#8 or so but never have seen any sort of standard or code requirement guiding sizing.

One approach I've heard is to simply match ground cable to cross sectional area of cable on the shield.

Does anyone else have any additional guidance or references on approach?

Is the drain current the same as the charging current?

In my opinion you should consult IEEE Std 575-2014
IEEE Guide for Bonding Shields and Sheaths of Single-Conductor Power Cables Rated 5 kV through 500 kV
They are many ways to bond the cable shield to grounding.
Some special bonding options include the following:
Single-point bonding
Multiple single-point bonding
Impedance bonding
Sectionalized cross bonding
Continuous cross bonding
If the bonding lead connects the shield with sheath voltage limiters see :
7.5.2 Bonding leads
