Hi all,
Api 650 Section 3.1.3.5 describes that max overlap is 1" for single lap and 2" for double lap joint.
I am not clear with this statement why single lap shall not exceed 1"?

This statement uses the wording "need not exceed" to define minimum (not maximum) widths of laps joints. In this context, does it make sense to you?

Thanks IFR, initially the words "need not exceed" I think is maximum, now I understand and agree with your replay

Only for complement to IFRs, see API 650 11th Edition, Add 2008, Appendix D - Technical Inquiries, Section 3.1 Joints.
