Our QC have questioned the use of the mechanical roll spring steel placed around the Earth Tape Shield. QC have found that the roll spring is magnetic and are questioning the use. I say is doesnt matter as the roll spring creates a laminated installation and will not cause overheating. On all the kits I have encountered I never had this question raised regarding the effect of this roll spring being magnetic. These roll springs are supplied by Raychem and I am sure this would have raised questions in the past. I am in Kazakhstan and it is difficult to contact Raychem. However if anyone out there knows of any issues regarding this type of termination. I would be greatful for any info.
It seems that one encounters questions never asked before and it is becoming difficult to prove that what we have done for years is now questionable.

I've never known of any problems with heating of the constant force spring. This is an extensively used method to attach earth braids to copper tape screens or wire screens. Not only Tyco Raychem joints, but also 3M's coldshrink range use this method as standard. It would be difficult to imagine two big players like that introducing the constant force spring if it was to cause localised heating and potential failure. There must be millions of joints and terminations in service across the World with constant force springs in them. If you have wire screens you can bring them out of the termination through a mastic seal, but with copper tape screens I've not seen any other method than the roll spring being used.

Looking at Tyco's website they appear to have test data available for their termination kits showing they meet the applicable IEEE standard for each type. If this is a paperwork drill for your QC folks the test documentation may meet their requirement. Try this link :
