I am a product design student at CSU Long Beach working on my senior thesis project. It involves desiging a product to help people keep track of their progress in Gyms (ie, LA Fitness).
It is still very conceptual, however I need to spec out a technology that I can use to send and recieve signals between free weights and machines and a wearable "reciever" (ie, a glove or watch).
Basically, I need the to have a way for the weights to "tell" the reciever how heavy it is. For example, when a person picks up a 40lb weight, this reciever will know its a 40lb weight. Something like a BAR CODE scanner, but much simpler. I need suggestions for various technologies that I can consider to use for this product. PLEASE HELP!
Thanks!
Just a quick thought but for simplicity you could use the same technology as that used in "smartcards". Each device has a magnetic strip that details the relevant information and the user passes their receiver (glove, watch) near it.

Sensormatix and Fasson Roll have designed a coded sticker label (it includes smart wires), that can contain any info you want. It is based on a similar technology that is used on some bank notes in different countries, to authenticate them.
It may be a bit expensive, but it'll be the way to go of the future.
This smart wire can be included on any support (glove, tshirt, ..) but then the guy must wear the same tshirt... (I hope he washes it after the gym !)
Look at Garage Door Opener technology. Known and available thru Digi-Key.
k
