Silver steel corrosion plating or replacement

We have silver steel(BS1407) threaded studs which will have chrome plated nuts placed on them. What is the best corrosion protection for the studs. We are considering nickel plating the studs. Our other option is to replace the studs with a different material.

What is the environment? What is the thread form and size? How thick is the chromium plating on the nut? Your proposed stud material is very risky for a preloaded fastener. Do you know what preload level you need?

Silver steel according to BS 1407 is not a good material for a threaded fastener. 709M40 or 817M40 according to BS 970 would be much better, as these are frequently used in threaded fastener applications and are readily available in bars, rods, or as threaded studs.
