Silo demolition in Denmark goes wrong and crushes cultural centre. No one injured when 53-metre high silo fell the wrong way, but library and music school were crushed.
When felling a tree, the scarf cut is just to weaken the tree in a certain direction. Control of the fall is determined by the hinge wood that remains. The idea is to leave as much hinge wood in place as possible. If there is too little hinge wood, the fall direction cannot be determined. By careful angling of the main felling cut, fall direction can be directed up to 45 degrees to either side of hinge cut direction. It works (for trees), years ago clearing a lot for my house took down several trees, up to 90 feet tall. The trouble with using this tree analogy for this project is the silo was hollow (no "hinge wood" equivalent), and the small amount of silo wall in the hinge area shattered.
In this image, the terms I used coincide with the "Elevation" view, "Plan" view is not the same, for some reason.
