Hello All,

Does anybody here have any empirical formulas for the amount of shrinkage when welding 304 stainless steel. I've looked at the formulas in Lincon Arc Foundations Procedures book but I guess they are for carbon steel as in practice the stainless shrinks alot more. I'm looking to get an estimation of shrinkage before production of assemblies if possible.
Welds used are fillet and butt welds. Need formulas for both transverse and longitudinal shrinkage if possible. We have from experience some rules of thumb for 3mm [1/8"] plate but would like to find something like the Lincon formulas where you can put in any thickness, weld size etc.

Cheers,

Womble

The coefficient of thermal expansion for austenitic (300 series) stainless steels is ROUGHLY 1.5 times that of carbon steel.
