Shell modeling

I am new in the area of shell modeling. Suppose i use 3d deformable planar shell and specify the thickness how will i get to know the through thickness stresses. say there r many layers. so i guess in this case i have to go for 3d shell extrusion right? also could anyone tell me the importna tthings to keep in mind when i am modeling with shell elements. Thanks
