Hello,

Can anyone suggest a suitable fluid to use when testing a unit that runs on Shell JP-5 (Mil-T-5624J)? We normally test units on our rig with Aeroshell Calibration Fluid 2. I've contacted Shell themselves to see if there is a similar calibration fluid equivalent to JP-5 but there are less than helpful. For insight, we are looking to test the CFM56-3 Oil/Fuel Heat Exchanger covered by ATA 79-21-24. I know Calibration Fluid 2 is an approved testing fluid but I'm having difficulty substantiating its use in testing this unit. Any suggestions would be appreciated..

Try contacting Rock Valley. We buy calibration fluids from them although not JP-5.

Be cautious...

Raw JP fuel is supplied to the military... which then blends in additives before delivery to the end-item [jet, helo, tank, etc]. The additives, such as anti-static, anti-icing, biocides, etc can be very abusive and/or have other non-intended consequences.

Mix ratios for the additives can vary quite a bit also, within the tanks, based on subtle factors such as additive evaporation from the fuel and re-deposition on tank walls above the fuel level. Then, during the next refueling, more fuel+additives is pumped-in that re-absorbs the additives [that had evaporated and clung to the tanks walls]. And the cycle can repeat many times. The classic "apple jelly" accumulation problem can occur with excess DIEGME mixed with excessive moisture in the fuel [evolved thru tank venting to the outside world].

Regards, Wil Taylor
