Does anyone have a 'canned' solution for this HSS connection or can provide a reference? Thanks... dik

It is not a good connection for large reactions, but clearly it has some strength for light loads.
To perform an accurate yield line analysis, the ratio PH/PV must be given.

Yup, it's for light loads only, but that's not what is spec'd... As spec'd, the engineering requirement that full section capacities have to be developed and it doesn't stipulate if axial loads or flexural loads. I've asked for loading clarification.

I'm looking for a 'canned' solution if one is available, else I can develop a yield line solution for specific values. I have one that I've developed for the conventional normal load with a moment applied, and would have to seriously modify it.

If PH is much larger than PV then the AISC Manual Fig. 9-5a / Eq. 9-30 could be used.

If PV is the dominant one then try Fig. 9-5b / Eq. 9-32.

If neither is small then I'm not aware of a canned solution.

I believe there are canned solutions in ASI Tubular Design Guide 23: Plate fitments. It is following AS4100 code. Sorry I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

The CIDECT Design Guides might also be helpful? Assuming Pv causes an axial force in the HSS then we might refer to Design Guide 9, longitudinal plate-to-RHS column. The ratio PH/PV is considered via an angle, theta.

Thanks... I have a copy of DG9... I think I can come up with a quick program... I'll post it later. I still need to find the design loads from the client. They are spec'd using the full section capacity... which is not correct and would have to be done using solid 'blocks' at the connections and CJP welds... which is not what the EOR intended... Thanks very much... if I have difficulties, I'll be back (with apologies to Arnold).

Be careful about out of plane bending of the connecting plates, if the strut is in compression. I think that CIDECT design guide may have predated the realization that eccentricity of single plates was a big issue.

Another factor is the load on the column from above. If the HSS is highly stressed, the value of PH and PV will be negatively affected.

For all HSS connections, I like using HSS Connexx program that is available for free on Steel Tube Institute website. The program was put together under the supervision of Prof. Jeffrey Packer at University of Toronto who is well know for his reasearch on tubular steel. The link to the software is below. It is fairly straight forward to use.
