Would 4140 Cold Drawn be a good material used in a 1 inch shaft that needs to withstand 30,000 Lbs tensile strength and also stand up well in a 45 degree bending moment? If not any sugestions? I know the tensile is no problem.

ETL: More information is needed. What do you mean by a 45 degree bending moment? Bending moments are in "in-#". where does the tensile stress come in? What safety factor are you using? What is the application and loading?

The conditions you state make no sense. You give a force or mass (30,000 pounds) and label it a strength/stress. You give an unspecified angle for your moment - do you need the shaft to deform from straight to 45 degrees? Do you apply a force at a 45 degree angle? To get meaningful answers, you will need to provide clearer input.

Sorry. I was thinking actual load and typing something different. Th shaft must withstand a linear load of 30,000 Lbs without yeild that is no problem. Forces will not always be linear is the problem, it will have forces (approximately 15,000 Lbs actual) applied to it at about a 45 degree angle to the shaft. A collegue of mine tried 1144 for some reason and it only withstood approximatly 6300 Lbs when tested applying force at 45 degrees to the shaft.
 
have you tried resolving the inclined force into the horizontal/vertical component (sin45 or cos45 whatever the case you have) ? so in addition to 30000, there is a vertical/horizontal force of 15000*sin(45)=10606 lbs.

Where is the 45 deg force located and how is the shaft supported? You can't get any useful answer without this info.
 
What type of shaft is this....rotating equipment? or just a beam? We design rotating equipment shafts using H11, 4145, and 8620....

By 1144, I assume that you meant Stressproof. UTS on 4140 is only about 30% greater than that. 30,000 lbs is one-helluva load for a 1 inch shaft.
