Settlements between adjacent footings

I am trying to compute the settlement on a specific footing but would like to also include the settlement (on the same footing) caused by the loads of 2 adjacent footings.

I read something about newmark;s chart, but i don't know exactly how to compute the settlements as newmark charts deal with stresses at some point.

Anyone can give some input about this topic?

Thanks a lot

I suggest that you pick up an introductory book on the use of Newmarck's charts. Basically for several "depths", you scale your footings accordingly (see the scale on the chart) and then you plot the footings (main and adjacent) on the circlular chart. Count the squares and this gives you an influence number. The effects of the adjacent footings and the number of segments they cover tell you how much (or little) influence they have on the main footing. By doing this for several depths (and for several points in the main footing) you can develop the applied stress with depth - and compute your settlements accordingly. For me, if you can drawn the footings and take a 2V:1H line from the footing edges and they do not intersect within a depth of 2B of the main footing, the adjacent footings have practically no influence - but I believe that all geotechnical engineers should do a few Newmark charts in their lifetime - to keep them honest vs the computer programs. Hope I've explained this okay - if I have time, I'll try to find the "right" geotext to give you . . . I have an Indian text that is very good on this - but wouldn't be available to you most likely.

Thanks a lot BIGH, I will try ur suggestions.

Can you please tell me the name of that indian book? Maybe I can get it at some university library. And also, do you think "elastic solutions on soils and rocks", by poulos and davis, can provide useful information?

Thanks again

The latter one, yes . . . as it has all the charts in it along with so so many others. I'll have to wait until I get to work in about 15 hours to post the book's name.

Thanks a lot BIGH,

I look forward to get that info.

The Indian text I was referring to is:

Kaniraj, Shenbaga R., "Design Aids in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering," Tata-McGraw-Hill, publishers.
