Setting up motion

I wish to set up motion of one part rotating constantly and another moving in and out in a non linear manner. I assume this could be done using functions Spline or Expression but I can't work out how to use these functions.

Have no mechanical linkage between two parts.

Any guidelines to using Simply Motion?

Hi,

1/ For the rotating part, select it at the top of the edgebar, choose properties / IC’s and enter a speed in the appropriate cell : … omega (your rotation axis).

2/ For the other part, you need another part that is fixed in motion. Create a translational joint that allows a translation (select the moving part, then the ground part, and choose the location and direction using face(s) and/or edge(s)).

3/ RMB on that joint. Choose properties / motion tab. You have 2 options (option a is only for one stroke back and forth)

a)Choose Acceleration and step. Enter an initial velocity if wanted. In the bottom pane, choose initial value at 50mm/s2 (for example) and the final at -200mm/s2 for the starting time, choose about 1/2 of your simulation time for example; for the final time, enter the same time +.1s (to have an almost instant transition from 50 to -200)

b)Choose Velocity and harmonic. Enter at least an amplitude and a frequency

Harmonic : F(t)=A*sin(w*(time-t0)-j)+B
Var : A=amplitude (highest value either positive or negative), w=frequency (distance or angle covered in 1s), t0=offset time(where to start the simulation on the curve), j=phase shift (value in radians; slides the function along X axis), B=average value (slides the function along Y axis)

NB: I’m not sure how to use spline and Expression is not available.

4/ If necessary, hide the fixed (ground) part using a display configuration created outside of motion.

5/ Remove the gravity in motion options, choose the length of the simulation and run it. after, you can loop the avi in windows media player to get the continuous movement.

When you get into the Motion Environment, have a look at the Help topics - it isn't brilliant but it will explain the basics.
Apparently the Spline option gives you 2 columns of a table to fill in.
In the Left column you can put time values, and in the right column the value of your input type at that time.
So if you are using Displacement you might have 0.1 in the left representing 0.1sec into your cyle and 100 in the right column representing 100mm displacement.
You have to have the same number of values in each.
If you imagine a graph of these points, and a spline curve drawn through them, this is how Solid Edge varies the input through the cycle.
It's great fun doing motion stuff - if all goes well !!
I tend to create my own joints rather than having them done automatically. You can then run the cycle as you add joints and see what happens.
