Does anyone have any sliced views or animations explaining how a bi-directional ratchet typically used in a sequential gearbox works?

No no, thats the drum, I am talking about the gear lever mechanism, it can ratchet both forwards and backwards.

Damn, sorry. I guess it'll be an escapement sort of a thing, that is a double-ended hooked lever. As you push it one way the sprag will engage on the tooth one way and lift the other end clear of the other teeth. OK, so I'm not a clockmaker!

Cheers

I struggle to find any good books on sequential transmissions, can anyone start me off at a good place?

Check some motorcycle manuals, same mechanism from what I've seen.

thanks!
