I'm working on a single family home that has a garage that was turned into an extra room. A new footing was poured to support the new wall that took the place of the garage door...however this footing wasn't fixed to the existing foundation, although it was poured flush to the existing foundation. Anyone have thoughts about potential problems with having essentially a "joint" in a continuous footing that has been in place for a number of years? My only thought is that there may be issues with separation and differential movement during a seismic event..

What are the soil conditions at the site?

Alluvial, relatively uniform conditions w/Silty Clay.

Where is the home located? (City & state only.)

Separation and differential movement will be an issue - with or without the seismic event...

differential settlement should be a concern. I have witnessed damage from differential settlements occurring after a conversion was made to a garage or similar structure. As Focht3 mentioned, seismic activity should not be the only concern. Long-term consolidation of soils under new loading conditions or shrinkage/expansion of fat soils may be an area of concern.
