Can anyone point in in right direction for above. Tried a google search and eng-tips search but didn't get satisfactory results.
 
The length should equal some multiple of the diameter.
 
You have given zero information from which to formulate any kind of meaningful response.
 
A lot of "old skool" guys always told me a rule of thumb was L/D > 2.5 or > 3. This would give sufficient sufficient support for side loads and bearing stresses. At the same time the >3 engagement would provide stability along the axis of the dowel.

Where they got those values I have no idea. Maybe a deep dive into Machinery's Handbook would turn up a clue or two. Most search engines like Google are utterly useless for this kind of stuff.

I presume that the Dowel Pin pans between two gland ports.

Would it not make sense to add the depth of these two gland ports and then round down to the nearest integral multiple of Dowel Pin diameter?

L/D ratios are out the window if you are pinning die laminations, fixtures, etc. It all depends on the application.

The OP has not returned to clarify, so this is all a futile exercise in shooting blindfolded at a moving target in the dark.
