Seismic requirements

Hi all

I have what I would consider a very odd question. It reqards seismic zones over the world. It has to do with the location of an industri and seismic requirements is one of many parameters.

I have written down locations and some info I already have. If somebody could add info I whould be very grateful.

Holland: No real seismic activity, Code Eurocode.
Brazil: Big country but none to small activity depending on location, Code ?
Chile: Strong seismic activity (proved by recent events), Code ?
New Zealand: Medium - strong seismic activity, Code New Zealand Building code or Eurocode(?)

Some is assumptions, other is based on primarily UBC 97.
Facts would be very much appreciated.

New Zealand has its own seismic requirements.

Australia: Intra-plate and very low seismic risk. Earthquakes greater than magnitude 6 occur once every 10 years and are located randomly over the Australian mainland. Events rarely exceed magnitude 7.0. Design Code AS1170.4-2007.

Notable Events in built-up regions

Most fatal earthquake was Newcastle in 1989, killing 13 people and collapsing the Newcastle Workers Club (soft-storey failure). Magnitude 5.5.

Adelaide 1954, Magnitude 5.4. No fatalities but did damage buildings.

Recently an offshore earthquake near Indonesia was felt in Darwin but not damage was experienced.

Brazil does not have a seismic code; they do however have a wind code.

Chile as two (possibly more) seismic codes. One for Industrial applications and the other for buildings. The industrial code is NCh 2369 and I am not sure of the number for the buildings. Industrial does cover buildings and structures similar to buildings used in industrial applications along with tanks, towers, and other process equipment.

Chile has fairly strict seismic design requirements.

The info I got here together with some other sources helped. At this stage it is just one of several parameters to make a decision. If / when the final design starts we obviously have to be much more specific regarding the requirements.

from what i know (my senior engineer told us), Europe don't have seismic code because of its low risk. He even told us that when he was there and there's a quake happened, people thought that there's a ghost hunting them. I don't know if its true

Earthquakes are the most damaging design load that engineers must account for. Turkey is a very good example of this.
