Seeking comment on engine failure. 1

We had a 350HP Cummins spit a piston out the side of the block while only about 30% loaded. It happens to be driving a generator so the thread got started in an electrical forum but I got to thinking you're actually the people who'd have ICE failure knowledge and might enjoy seeing this.

Is the injector destroyed? I would pull that one and have it tested. A leaking injector cause a piston failure in several ways. It can cause the cylinder to hydraulic, it can crack the piston crown by overheating, and it can wash lubrication from the cylinder wall and cause a seizure. You need to look at how the piston came apart. Did it break through the crown? Was the wrist pin ripped from the bottom? Is there metal wiped across the ring grooves?

Even if the injector tip is smashed, they may still be able to do a leakdown test. Are the valves still in the head?

Cummins used to use pressure timed injectors where fuel supply pressure controls injection duration. Is this one of those engines? A restricted return line or stuck mechanism can cause a cylinder to run at full power eventually overheating and damaging that cylinder, breaking flywheel bolts, or taking out a crankshaft due to torsional vibrations.

Hoxton; This company has no records like that. The equipment is used sporadically by occasional staff. I understand they just laid off 3/4th of their staff since I put up this thread. I'm waiting to see what shakes out before offering any more help.
