I have a project that involves providing security fencing around a site that has areas of relatively steep grade. Is there any criteria on the allowable grades adjacent to the fence line?

From experience we wouldn't design a fence on
anything larger than a 3% grade.

Erosion has a big effect after awhile. That's
why we tried to keep the fence posts as flat
as possible.

We even had problems with the structure of
retaining walls when the grade was over 10%. This
took over 5 years but it still became a problem.

IF the slope is susceptible to movement, I would suggest keeping the fence well beyond the top of the sheer plane, as determined by a geotechnical engineer. This will not only provide a due diligence arguement to the owner but also define the "escarpment boundary" in case of developments wishing to encroach.
