Ok, I have many assemblies where I have a circuit board enclosed in a box that's about 4"x2"x1" with a cable that is up to 12 feet long. What I'm looking to do is to be able to model the cable true length. The problem is that when it comes time for assembly prints, the cable is so long that no details of the box can be seen because it's so zoomed out.

What I'm looking to do is to do a cut-out section, but SolidWorks doesn't appear to do this. Anyone have any ideas? I could do two configurations and two views, one for the box construction, and one for the cable hookup, but I'd prefer to have everything shown at once. Any ideas are much appreciated.

Do different configurations of the cable length. Different configs in the cable model, then different configs in the cable assy, then different configs in the main assy.

If you only want to do this in the ass'y drawing, look up "cropped view" in help.

There is a cut-out section view but it does something different than what you seem to be after.

Another alternative is an assembly cut which could be suppressed in a config.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Opps - I stated there is a cut-out section view. I was thinking of the Broken-out section view. But you still want the cropped view.

When desperate times call go to desperate measures, we have put views off the drawing paper and then made details of the hidden views on the drawing, I know it is not good practice but in a pinch sometimes it is easier to get it done and then do it right afterwards.

Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches.

Istre ... You have a couple of options:-

1) Place the full length view of the assy in a drawing ... do the Broken-out section that you want on the box, then do a Detail View which includes that Broken-out section.

2) Place the full length view of the assy in a drawing ... use the Insert > Vertical Break feature to "shorten" the cable length so that the sheet scale can be made full scale, then do the Broken-out section.

THAT'S IT! Thanks, CorBlimeyLimey and the rest for all of your help.

sorry, I missunderstood. I thought you were looking for something else. CBL is correct, it is how I do my cables.
Happy it worked out.
