I have a client who is utilising a secondary containment tank instead of a dike. The gap between the primary and secondary tank is around 750mm.

Can the containment tank be viewed as a method of exposure protection for the primary tank containing Distillate Fuel Oil? Thus negating the need for a tank water spray system?

Thanks

The secondary containment tank you describe sounds like a dike to me. Therefore, there is no benefit in protecting achieved from fire exposure.

Oh by the way, you will find that the 750 mm gap is insufficient to meet OSHA rules and possible the NFPA 30 requirements. The minimum gap size is five feet. Also, if the dike is deeper than six feet a walkway between the top of the dike and the tank may be required.
