Sealing Record Drawings 1

I am looking at an RFP that requires, as part of the scope of work, the record drawings (aka as-builts) are to be stamped and signed by the respective disciplines. Has anyone seen this before? What are your thoughts?

Has been debated in these environs and just not done. Too many problems for sealing... unless you (and I mean the engineer sealing the documents) have full time supervision of the project, and the client is not likely prepared to pay for this... and for liability reasons, I don't want to waste my time.

As built drawings should be provided by the contractor... and the information can be added to the project drawings without seal and, generally, without company titlebox...

Just sign and seal but include a sentence next to the seal that disclaims any certification or warranty that any of the information is correct as it was only delivered to you by the contractor and you have no way of verifying its accuracy.

Your seal doesn't certify anything anyway (at least in the US) - it only identifies you as the engineer who prepared the plans.

I have seen this before, and on the projects in question, it just didn't get done.

One thing to watch is that it seems to be a fairly regular disciplinary action when engineers seal "as-built" drawings which turn out to be inaccurate (ie, the engineer didn't even look at the "as-built" situation.) With that in mind, I'd be learing of sealing them even with the disclaimer- better to have copies of the sealed drawings marked up by others to reflect as-built unless you're personally able to go check everything out.
