Hi,
I have been a PE for few years now. Recently, I sat for 16 hour SE test and passed. Do you know which of the east coast states has an SE title act? The state that I am in (VA) does not have one.

Congratulations! Just off the top of my head, I don't know of any east coast states that have an SE title act. The closest may be Illinois.

Cograts! Steellion is correct, IL has SE. You should register, they are not very expensive when it comes to renewal either, I think like $76 2/years. TX PE on the other hand is like 250 for 1 year.

You primarily need to consider whether your home state limits the use of that title. If not, you should be able to use it (in addition to "PE") whether you're actually licensed in a state with a title law or not. If in doubt, run the question by your state board and see if they have any input. I know here in TX, which doesn't license by discipline, you can still bill yourself as a "Structural Engineer" on business cards and the like.

I have contacted VA, the only title they would permit is PE. Ny, Fl are probably the same way.

It sounds to me that my only option is TX or one of the other SE states?

i don't mean to be thick but who administered your test? i didn't know you could take the test without reference to a specific application for license.

...or maybe I'm thinking of a different test. Isn't the SE the same as taking S1 + S2? I got my license in FL by taking the S1 and I though I just needed the S2 in order to apply for the SE certification through NSPE or SEI or whatever...it's been a few years tho.

I have taken the test thru va. Since, I am also a pe there, va will not issue me a new license, for the same reason will not allow se title. In Florida I believe it's same as va.

Fyi, se 1 & 2 are replaced with the new 16 hour se test. Ncees does not administer se 1 and 2 any longer. Unfortunately, you will need to take the new 16 hour test to be an SE.

Call the state boards in states adjacent to you and see which one recognizes an SE as opposed to a PE. Your state board could probably give you a list too.

A few others I can relate to from experience are:

Washington, Utah, Idaho, California, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona,and Oregon.

And very hearty congratulations are deserved here. You earned it!

your list is very comprehensive and helpful. It describes practice restriction in each state in details, however does not quite tell if any of the other states that do not have practice restriction but permit an SE title. The only such state per my limited knowledge is TX. I was hoping some other state may also be like TX. Do you know?

My guess is that the states that do not have an SE title act, SE partial practice act, or SE practice act but only have PE status wouldn't care or have any authority over the use of a title that they don't acknowledge. If I wanted to put on my card that I was "Engineer of the Universe" (U.E. after my name) I'm pretty sure that the engineering board wouldn't care.

I am not so sure.

Here in NJ my guess is that if the board found out about a phony license
on a card they probably would fine you. Fines in NJ can run anywhere from $500 to $15,000 and I have seen where licensed surveyors have had to take additional classes. There website is filled with huge fines, consent orders and settlements.

I used SE after my name, and still do in Colorado, but in other states such as New York, North Dakota, New Mexico and Montana without any repercussions - all states with PE only from what I remember. I have been licensed in all in the past. I believe the way I signed was "PE, SE".
