A file created in R11 can be worked on in R12. A file that is createdin R12 cannont be opened by a previous release. You could use the downward compatability function, but that will only give you a solid with no history, or iges out data.

The CATBACK under utilities enables the user down grade a CATPart from one version to another. I know that R11 to R10 works without the loss of features and dressups (except possibly some enhanced or R11 specific features). I am unaware if this is true for R12, since I have not moved above R11 yet as my customer has not upgraded to R12 due to some API conflicts with their product manager.
