We have written a macro to create a dxf of the flat pattern of our parts. I haven't been able to figure a way to save the dxf with a preview available for opening it later. In AutoCAD, I'm able to save a preview when saving the dxf. Is that possible to do from SolidWorks?

Create a dwg (without format) from your flat pattern then save a slddrw and a dxf. The slddrw file will give you a preview. I have never had my pc show a preview for dxf, so don't know if possible. Could be a windows setting, not sure.

Ctopher has a good point. I get a preview for .dwg, but not for .dxf.

That's really not the answer I was looking for. I could do that, but then I have two separate files. If a change is made to one, they won't be the same. It's also a lot of wasted space.

Sorry, the only answer I have. Most CAD are the same.
IMO, a preview of DXF is not important anyway, the editable file it came from is.
