Sample Assembly files having parts with external references

I am looking for a sample assembly file having parts with external references. Can anybody please provide me such sample assemblies.
OR please guide me with steps to create/add parts with external references.

External references could look like copy geometry, published geometry, an old school merged part, or... What's your end goal? What are you trying to learn?
