How to set samba configuration to work propery with solidworks' locks? I have windows stations working with a Linux/Samba server, sometimes something happens and the conection is lost(Solidworks stop working and I need to close it for exemple), then all opened files will not save anymore and I have to kill all conection with samba and sometimes I have to overwrite all files with locals copies so Solidworks don't crash during the startup.

I am sorry I cant answer. Hope some one else can.
But, I am glad to know that Linux users work on SWx too...

packmen,

Is a Linux server really a good idea? Linux file permissions are quite different from Windows ACLs. I am not surprised you are having problems when SolidWorks crashes.

All data from here is store in a single server, besides this problem it work's great, it does automatic backups, access control, internet firewall and it will never be infected by virouses. I can make a second file server only for Solidworks users but I really want to try this single solution.

packmen,

Given the amount of disk access SolidWorks does, a second server is not a bad idea. SolidWorks should be contained within the smallest network possible.

Linux is able to backup other servers on its network. Windows does automatic backups too.

A major advantage of Free Software like Linux is that you are not paying license fees. There is nothing to stop you from grabbing a bunch of old, clunky, but reliable boxes, and setting up separate servers to do each critical task. If someone hacks into your mail server, he gets no access to your router or your website or your accounting database or your file server.

It sounds like you are being penny wise and pound foolish. What does a SolidWorks station cost you, $10K? If you have a bunch of them, get a Windows server for them, and keep the SolidWorks users off the main network.

If you get PDM/PDM software, everyone can check out onto their local hard drives. This is strongly recommended for high performance 3D CAD. You can make everyone write a zip file to the network before they go home.

I haven't experienced to many problems doing this except with PDMWorks not wanting to run the vault on Linux.

You might want to look this over: Oplocks

Also look at the nmb daemon log files real time while running SW and see what it is choking on. This can give a clue.

Are you on a system that is using domains, or just simple workgroups?

Windows has yet to get SMB to work right. They change things with every new OS they put out. Proprietary OS like Windows suck for that reason. SAMBA has kept up with them pretty well though.
