SAFE v12 punching shear

Hello guys,

I have a model of a flat plate, with a couple of shear walls on the perimeter. I have trying to verify the punching shear of the columns but for some reason I don't know, SAFE won't calculate the punching shear on the perimeter columns ("N/C" result).

When does SAFE stop calculating punching shear? If the columns are of different dimensions above and below the slab, does SAFE stop its punching shear check?

There is a technical paper about SAFE punching shear check. They have given all the limitations and some hand calcs.
I hope you can find out in the SAFE folder with manuals and i believe that will give your answer.
 
Thank you. I found the paper on the Computers and Structures website, but it did not solve my problem.
 
i spoke to technical support about safe 12 issues (including yours) - the answer is you need to wait next revision, as i was told during next couple of weeks, where all the known bags will be fixed.

My opinion is get the forces for punching shear and do the manual check. We are using SAFE v12 but still I find the some of the results different from manual calculation. It might be the punching area which is the problem.

Yes, that's what I decided in the end. I still hope CSI will actually update SAFE v12 and fix some bugs. I found that, as you thought, the punching area isn't always accurate. Sometimes, for some unknown reasons, SAFE would "ignore" the added thickness from a drop panel.
 
Yea. Anyway, Are you familiar with ETABS? Im confused with RS Analysis. Hope you could help me out. I had a question in etabs section.

Unfortunately, I almost never used ETABS so far. I am still looking to find a project where I will use it. Sorry about that.

How do you check local and global bearing stress in SAFE for rafts? How do you check deflection? and differential settlement?

What do you mean by global bearing?? Do u mean soil bearing pressure??

I dont know if SAFE can do differential settlement and i will love to know if you get an idea.

alphaxy: I would love to actually help you do that but I am pretty young in my profession and never had to design a raft yet (at leats, not an entire one, only a portion of an existing raft, by hand).
 
@zeemas: Yes..the bearing pressure of raft as a whole and the local bearing pressure locally at each point load

In showing the actual bearing stresses (which should not be equal nor greater than the allowable bearing stress, qa) which should I use to view or check this? Deformed shape or slab stresses?

In Deformed shape where I can define the contour range. Is this where I can set the limits for allowable bearing stress or is this for settlement?

I am not sure if we can check settlement in deformed shape because there is a limits to be defined, but in other softwares we get the joint displacement to get the max and min settlement then subtract to obtain differential.
