Dear heat exchanger folks,

Aside from those in square box headers (Appx 13), does ASME Section VIII address a required thickness or minimum thickness (as TEMA does) for pass partitions in shell & tube heat exchangers?

I couldn't find anywhere that it does.

BigTank, I am not aware of any ASME rules or requirements on pass plates. ASME does not often address internals. Probably be a future UHX subject:)

Very good. Thank you SnT. I knew I could count on you and/or gr2vessels to respond quickly!

The pass partition plate is not part of the pressure boundary so in theory, ASME doesn't care what you make its thickness to be. TEMA, on the other hand, is all about designing Hx's and internals are the important point.

As a tip, if your pass partition plate is welded to the pressure boundary, I recommend nothing less than full pen welds. Not everyone does that, but the pressure boundary does flex with pressure change and the pass partition plate doesn't (necessarily).
