Hi all.

Kind of new to engineering. Recent graduate and all.

What characteristics of a metal (or I guess... what kind of chemical make-up) is prone to cause rust. Is Fe the only factor or are other elements and ions needed.

I'm asking because I'm trying to determine if we need to continue using Oakite LRS or to move on to a product that just does cleaning and not rust removal.

Thanks.

Please provide more details on the product, process, etc. Is Oakite LRS part of a paint pre-treatment? Corrosion in the form of red rusting occurs when iron is present in an environment that features oxygen at nominally ambient temperature and usually a modest amount of moisture. What fabrication or manufacturing processes have been used prior to receiving the part? Has it been welded, forged, stamped, etc.?
