Morning everyone,

Does anybody have a quick calculation for sizing rupture disks? I’ve looked at API RP 250 and spoke with our flow assurance group but I’m not looking to produce a full flow assurance model. I’m just looking for something that will get me in the ball park for sizing for a fluid system before I go out for quotes.

Cheers,
Kat

John,

Thanks for the link.

I know my question was pretty vague, but to be honest I didn't really know what specifically you would need to ask in order to size a burst disk. I was brought into a team that was working on a pressure relief system and was just looking for some basic information.

Cheers,
Kat

First of all you need to know the required flow through the disk.

Sizing a disk is esentially pipe sizing. Assume a diameter, calculate the flow and compare.
Interate diamters until the rated flow capacity exceeds required flow.

The disk is part of continuous pipe system - from the vessel entrance, through the inlet pipe, through the disk , and out the exit pipe.
The pipe inlet pressure is (MAWP + accumulation).
Per ASME Code, the disk has Crane Kfactor=2.5 unless you have actual vendor data.
Also, you have to apply a 10% uncertainity factor i.e, the pipe endorsed capacity is only rated for 90% actual calculated.
