Hi,

I'm needing to model quite a lot of items that are rubber. They have two states, 'free' and 'compressed'. What I'd like is for Solid Edge to have a feature for components like this, where you get two states. Trying to model the items using adjustable parts features is not going to work due to the complexity of the items. The two states will be used in the following manor. Free state - piece part, will be ordered to. Compressed State - for GA drawings. I'm thinking of going down the alternate part route, but I'm not convinced this is the best way. Does anyone have a solution?

How about a family of parts (FOP)?

Member 1: Free state
Member 2: Compressed state

Otherwise you might try Simplified parts, but as you say the parts are complex, I think FOP will be your best guess.

I would just model them in the free state and accept the fact that they will show an interference on assemblies.
Trying to have different states will only cause problems later - for example, how many compressed states might you need ?
I suppose if it's only one other state you could try simplified parts as Schipperus says (I think you can ADD features as well as remove them in simplification).

Use flexible parts if you only need to change the thickness of the rubber. If you need to change its shape to show the deformed state, like in an o-ring, then you are better off with FOP or just allowing the interference.

Assembly reference parts?

Back before some of the more advanced functionality we came up with this.

Create model of the free state part for the drawings etc.

Create model of the compressed part for the assy. File it using the assembly part number -AR_ where _ is a unique identifier.

It's not perfect as in some cases you end up with configuration control issues but it's an idea.

KENAT, probably the least qualified checker you'll ever meet...
