RS-232 to excel direct without Active-X

Is there a way to communicate with an instrument so that data transfer can be direct from instrument to the spreadsheet via VBA without Active-X controls such as the Windmill software.

If you have VB you have the file MsComm.ocx on your computer, which you can add to you project as a reference. If you do not have visual Basic there is a freeware version by Richard Grier. See the web page below for info.
