I have had several projects come across my desk lately that call for round precast concrete columns. The precaster I design for has never cast round columns because they would need to be poured vertically to get the shape and then they have all of the bug-holes associated with cast in place.

Anyone have any experience with round precast columns that are cast horizontally? The ones I have seen called out have been between 28"ø and 36"ø and up to 40' tall.

I imagine the round precast columns you have seen are actually spun columns. Made the same way as spun power poles, but without the taper. They are hollow, and for structural use, the annular space is typically filled with concrete, where continuity reinforcement is added. An additional requirement for structural work is that the circular segment of internal laitance needs to be removed.
