Probably a simple question but this has me foxed!

I have rectangular rosette gauge readings from a test where one of the readings is compressive and the other two tensile. I am after the max and min principle stresses, but when I plug the minus compressive stress into the formulas I end up with a min principle stress of higher magnitude than the max principle stress, because of the minus value input.

Should I ignore the signs until the end?

Hope this makes sense; thanks,

Tony
