Rolled fittings???

Hello,

This is probably a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway...nobody is around the office. What is a "rolled" fitting? I'm working in designing underground utilities and I have some mark-ups done by my supervisor. He told me to call out the rolled fittings....and I'm at a loss. It's generally where we have a 90-degree horizontal bend with a vertical elevation change. Can someone clarify what is meant by the term "rolled" in this sense?

We use the the term "roll fitting" where "roll" is a verb, meaning to rotate the fitting to achive a change in grade along the pipe. It's not a special fitting, just provides direction on placement.

may be of help to you (I think formulae etc. are also now available in an AWWA standard applicable to steel water pipe specials/layouts etc.)

This usually applies to horizontal bends which are rotated slightly to achieve a vertical grade break which is greater than a regular pipe joint can give you.

You'll see it a lot at connections to existing pipes, where you use a 45 degree bend to tie into existing mains, and need to gain or lose some elevation to match the existing elevation.
