Issue
After selecting the Text tool in Fireworks and then clicking the canvas, either of these unexpected situations occur:

The Text Editor does not appear and when you press keys on the keyboard, other tools in the Tools panel are activated.
One of the following "internal error" messages appear:

Reason
These unexpected results occur when a system device driver, named Rich Edit, is either corrupt, not installed, or needs to be updated. The switching of the tools in the Tools panel happens because, after the Text Editor fails to open, the system keyboard shortcuts are initiated.

Any program on the computer that offers Rich Text (such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Macromedia Fireworks, and so on) needs access to a version of the Rich Edit DLL in the operating system. Launching any one of these applications and seeing if an error message appears is a good test of the DLL issue when these unexpected results occur in Fireworks.

The Rich Edit DLL file that is used with an application depends on the version of the Windows operating system that is in use. The application currently in use will generate the error message received when the application cannot detect a usable Rich Edit DLL. An error message generated by a Microsoft product will often be specific as to the cause of the problem. In the case of a problem associated with a Rich Edit DLL, the error message will let the user know that the DLL is corrupt or missing. Programs that are not part of the Microsoft line of products (such as Fireworks) do not have this advantage, and so the error message generated by Fireworks will not be specific to the Rich Edit DLL.

Solution
Before installing a new DLL, you will first need to determine (from the Microsoft Web site) the correct DLL version to install. Macromedia cannot offer technical support on how to install DLLs in your operating system; however, the following Microsoft resources are available to accomplish this goal:

1 Determining the correct Rich Edit DLL version for your operating system
Determine which version of the Rich Edit DLL will be required by your operating system before replacing the DLL.

There are two Rich Edit DLLs: RICHED20.DLL and RICHED32.DLL. Each of these DLLs has three different versions.

For more specific information on the Rich Edit DLL file (and the specific version) that you should install on your particular operating system, consult the Microsoft Developer Network Library and search for "Rich Edit."

2 Installing the new Rich Edit DLL version
After determining the Rich Edit DLL version that you need, the file can be installed. The following Microsoft articles will help you determine the the location and installation of the DLL file:

Article DLL type: description
Q291651 RICHED20.DLL: Outlook Stops Responding with RICHED20.DLL Error Messages

Q187973 RICHED20.DLL: Error Messages Causes Outlook to Fail
Q291651 RICHED32.DLL: Error Message When Starting E-mail Program or WordPad
Q236286 RICHED32.DLL: Out of Memory Error Message Using the Rich Textbox Control (file download available)

This list is only a sample of the information found on Microsoft's Web site. If these articles do not provide enough information, search Microsoft's site for the additional articles. Article paths on Microsoft change often, so if you cannot find these articles search for archived articles at MSDN.micosoft.com.

Note: If you are uncomfortable with installing a new DLL for your operating system, contact Microsoft technical support.
