Revision Table for Initial Release

I've heard a few different thoughts on this topic, but I was not able to find an answer in ASME Y14.5 - 2009 and have not found one online.

Should a revision table exist on a drawing before any revision has been made? I think the revision can be listed as A, -, 1, 0, or a few different formats for the initial drawing, but should there be a table on the drawing just to note that there is no revision?

ASME Y14.5 covers GD&T. Drawing numbers, signatures, standard format sizes, etc are not in the scope of that standard, but are in ASME Y14.1.

Per ASME Y14.35M-1997, chapter 5.1:
"Initial issue of a drawing does not constitute need for a revision letter and may be indicated by the use of a - (dash)".

For me this means that it is allowed to place a revision block on a drawing before any revision has been made.

By the way, excerpt from the very same chapter:
"Upper case letter shall be used in sequence beginning with A and omitting letter I, O, Q, S, X and Z. When the single letters have been exhausted, the revisions following Y shall be AA, AB through AY [...] Revision letter shall not exceed two characters".

You will max out this list if you revise your documents 420 times (assuming you use - as your intial release).

I agree that initial release of a technical drawing is not a revision. If you go to the Defense Logistics Agency website, view some of the standard drawings there; you can see that there is nothing in the REVISIONS block at initial release:

I think the OP is asking if there even needs to be a revision table on an initial release drawing.

In the days of paper drawings, the preprinted sheets usually had the revision column headers on the paper/vellum.
In today's CAD world, I guess it would be optional as you can add a revision table when you do the first revision.
In all of the CAd drawing formats I have done in UG and Pro/E, we have always included the initial blank table as part of the formats. This saves the engineer from having to locate the table and position it on the format in the proper location. It also serves as a reminder that there should be NO drawing views under the space of the revsion block, though this is often overlooked.

I have all templates including the rev table, if it's used or not.
If no rev, I use "-".
Then, prelim are numerical, followed by alpha for release.

It all depends on the standards of the company you are working for... We start with "A" for Production release... some companies start with "1" for Production release... and there are some companies who call it version rather than revision... i don't understand why it is a big issue what you call it, as long as you clearly identify it in the revision block.
