Thanks guys, I've tried any date, restore points and others to no avail. I've seen a bit about the restore properties and also the sfc/scannow function. I'll try these when I get home.

Your XP is probably honked up and needs to be scrubbed/reinstalled. There may also be some issues with memory allocation for restore and the number of programs you have installed.
All Ok now. I used sfc\scannow and it restored some corrupted files. I haven't retried System Restore as I don't want to go back now I know it's OK. I've made a new restore point now.
