Required coating on a steel pipe pile? 1

Is any coating generally required on a steel pipe pile that is entirely below grade?

I've never heard of any - other than bitumen coating to help reduce, supposedly, downdrag forces.

Very seldom in soils, more usual in water for marine structures. The coating is going to be damaged during driving and will not offer a guaranted protection. Other solution to protect against corrosion is to consider a sacrificial thickness in the wall thickness of the pile ( common solution ) or cathodic protection ( less common and requires maintenance )

We used sacrficial zinc bars on H-piles on our Hartford, Ct I91/I84 interchange back in the 90's. The reason was the soil had been contaminated with incinerator waste decades before.
