I use 1/32 inch on diameter, box X pin. I then round to the nearest 1/64 inch fractional diameter. Typically these are 1/4 inch wide, maybe 3/8 inch on the back of the box.
For example, 1.000 - 8 Stub Acme-2G would exhibit a thread relief of 0.859 dia X 1/4 inch long on the Pin, and 1.062 inch X 1/4 inch long on the front of the Box (i.e. counter bore) and 1.062 inch X 3/8 inch at the back.
I like to break these reliefs with a 45 degree angle in all cases.
Note that you would apply the 1/32 inch over diameter relief to tyhe miniminm minor diameter on the Pin, maximum major diameter on the Box. I have a threading program which determines this for me, good for Acme, Stub Acme and UN (coarse, fine, extra fine & special). This saves me time in recomputing the proper threading geometry.
