Release of engineer files 1

Hello, I recently was awarded a small job involving a tentative map. The project was started by another engineer, but the developer wants to change engineers. Some of the original engineer's file will be helpful and he doesn't have a problem releasing them to me. The only stipulation given was to send him a letter requesting the files and releasing him as engineer. Does anyone have a sample draft of such a letter? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

This is a fairly common occurance in site/civil. I don't understand what he means by "releasing him as engineer". When you take his title block off and put yours on, your firm is the engineer. Further - and more to the point - once you seal your product, you are the Engineer of Record. There is no requirement I am aware of to "Release" an engineer.

The more important item will be who seals the basemap, for survey accuracy. He can still do, even on your firms title block. But he might not want to. In that case, you will have to have a Surveyor willing to seal it. At a minimum, he should mapchaeck the boundary, and do field edits on topo, at least in the area of work.

the developer should write the letter and request the file transfer and I'm sure he will have no problem with the wording. note that the other engineer has no contractual relationship with you, so you have no authority to release him from anything.
