Am I to assume fy of 33 ksi or 40 ksi?

I believe that standard came in a variety of grades: structural, intermediate, and hard. The yield stresses would have been assumed to be 33, 40, or 50. Do you see any notes designating the grade?

The A15 standard also could have been for smooth bars or deformed bars depending on the era so you should confirm they are deformed.

jd, the only relevant note I can see is "for deformation of reinforcement comply with ASTM A-305-50T". Other then they have a note for column reinforcement as "ASTM A16-54T"

Slide, I found the same result that you posted with my google search but did not find it conclusive. My notes do not say anything about intermediate etc.

I've only worked on a handful of retrofits of buildings during that era so I'm not sure what was most common. The reinforcing on those projects I believe was all specified as intermediate. I don't know if that is typical for most buildings or not. Perhaps, someone with more experience during that time can chime in if certain bar sizes came in certain grades more commonly. Personally, I'd just assumed fy = 33 ksi unless you have reason to suspect otherwise.

Depending on the work you are doing, it probably also is a good idea to take some steel coupons of the reinforcing to confirm properties. ASCE 41 has recommendations on how many coupons to take, etc.

Thanks jdg, I was leaning towards the safer side (33 ksi) and I'll go with that for now. Would recommend field testing if the retrofit solution gets too elaborate.
