Since a helix/spiral sweep requires the use of a circle, how does one create a spring that is rectangular in shape- i.e. a rectangle with tangent arcs on the short ends? I am a new to this (undergrad) and I do not know enough about 3d sketches to make a smooth angled curve.

Yes, Helix and spirals (Path for sweep) require a circle, and then you create any profile (circle, rectangle or any odd shape)..

but if you need your path to be in broken line (broken line sprial), you have to use 3D Sketch (very complicated in this case), create any profile and then use sweep feature as usual
